TrumpPosted by AG (London, United Kingdom) on 11 July 2006 in Art & Design. William Hogarth, 1697-1764, the painter and satirist, lived and worked in my part of London. A few years back, local businesses and interest-groups clubbed together and raised funds for a bronze statue for the street. Hogarth had a series of pug dogs, one of which he named Trump, and, in 1745, he painted a self-portrait in which the dog was featured. When, first, our local statue was erected, the funds did not stretch to the dog . . so there was a further collection and Trump was duly added later. [ Just to confirm there is nothing new under the sun, Hogarth was troubled by theft of his work – piracy – with several of his works being copied onto chinaware without even so much as a credit. He successfully campaigned for the first ever enactment of a law protecting intellectual rights, The Engraving Copyright Act, 1734 ]. - AG Welcome to American Grey | light This site stands in the long shadow of American Grey | frames, my (closed) original photoblog 2005-2009.
