A Quick Ruffle

Back in 1957, the River Thames through London was declared ‘biologically dead’ due to the high levels of pollution and it was said that herons would never be seen on the river again.

Today, after decades of clean-up and the disappearance of much of the polluting industry along the river, the prospects have been transformed. Fish are again in abundance and not only are the herons back but their colonies are at an all-time high.
