[ in Waterloo Place, London, England ]
A detail panel from a monument to Sir John Franklin (1786-1847), who mapped much of the coastline of North America but perished in an attempt to navigate the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic.
Curiously, an expedition was announced just last month to go search for Franklin’s ships as part of renewed interest in the Northwest Passage. The route is projected likely to become navigable in these times of ‘global warming’ and finding the ships would assist the Canadian government in laying firmer claim to those northern arctic regions.
