Flooded Out

A sudden increase in water levels has partly flooded this coots’ nest. Although I was able to supply fresh twigs and leaves which dad ferried out to the nest at frantic pace, the battle to save the nest was all but lost.

Fortunately, the chicks are already competent swimmers but they still need the warmth and safety of the nest at night.

The water levels will fall again and, if the chicks can survive one night, they should be okay. Eggs in another nest nearby had not yet hatched and, sadly, will be lost to the chill of the risen water.

I am pleased to report that the chicks survived the night and, although the nest is still endangered, they all seem to be okay!
